[Squab can do that, you know… if you eat too much… of which, when you’re talking squab, any = too much.]
But anyway, ever since then, Americans of all nationalities have traditionally given thanks on or around this blessed day. As George Washington himself wrote (in 1977):
“Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation…..”
So, friends, let us do likewise this year… and every year!
‘Course it would be helpful to know exactly who that ‘great and glorious Being’ is, exactly – so we can thank Him properly. This, of course, is the eternal mystery of Thanksgiving! However, I think I just might have solved it!
I’m thinking, based upon watching a whole bunch of movies lately, that it might be Marvin Hamlisch -- on account of he is the author of some pretty good musical scores -- and after all, if he's the author of some good stuff, and there exists an author of all good stuff, then it follows that he must be the guy!
So thanks, Marvin Hamlisch!
